I used to go to the Chiefs' games at the 14th street armory with my dad every Sunday. We went to other arenas, but I don't remember which ones. We loved Mike Gammon, his dad & mom and Mike's wife Judy McGuire. We had a love/hate relationship with Charlie O'Connell, since he skated for the bombers at that time. I miss the old fashioned style of play.

Ira I missed the old roller derby too. The skaters today are good, but no one can replace: jan vallow, joanie. green hair ann calvello, o'conner, ronnie robinson, tucker, the gammons, and so-forth. do they have a roller derby team ( were men and women skate)?in new york?

It seems that the Chiefs had a perfect formula of skaters who were young and athletic and... had enough experience doing the choreography that it always looked real.

I'm sorry to say that - so far - those type of games will never happen again unless young skaters do derby for a living and perform 5 days a week in order to create that magic again.

Pretty KOOL that you went to the Armory to see them. I set a few of my novels chapters at the Armery in NY. ROLLER BABES by D. M. Bordner

I started out as a San Francisco Bay Area Bombers fan in the 1960's. When they re-formed the New York Chiefs team that became my team. I went to many games on Long Island and Madison Square Garden. My best friend at the time was named Cathy and we both were in "love" with half of the skaters. She was crazy for John Early and I had such a crush on Bob Dancel! I still have all the yearbooks and autographs plus many, many pictures I took of all the players. Thoses were the good old days to me!

Hello Barbara!
Those WERE the good old days and I miss them! Remember John "Porkie" Parker, Mike Gammon, and Charlie O'Connell, just to name a few? What about Ronny Robinson? I remember John Early, they all were so much fun to be around, even when not skating. So you were one of the groupies, huh? lol I was wondering if you had any photos of the NY Chiefs, specifically me, #49. We lost everything in a house fire in our Forked River home in 1983. If you do I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me some pics. My email is sandyman060@yahoo.com.
