RollerFans.com: The Roller Sports FanSpace!

Okay, this is my first discussion thread on rollergames so I thought I would ask the current and past fans and players who they would pick for their all time team. Here's the criteria:

Seven men, seven women. (This is going by 5 on 5 with 2 alternates per squad.)

For an all girl all time team, (optional,) 4 jammers and 6 blockers will suffice.

Any and all eras count and yes, you can mix present day rollergirls with the old school on any ladies team you choose.

Managers are optional.

With that, I'll get the ball rolling with my all time team. (Based on 22 years of watching tv games, videos, youtube and the very odd live bout.) Enjoy!

MEN:

Ronnie Rains: IMO, the greatest men's skater of all time.

Harold Jackson: As close as you will ever get to Rains.

Bernie Jackson: Easily the greatest blocker ever and a pretty solid jammer in his prime.

Charlie O' Connell: The DEAN of roller derby in his prime and even at the end of the line a great blocker.

Mark D'Amato: Ronnie Rains Lite. Nuff Said.

ALTERNATES:
Ralphie Valladarez and Danny Riley

WOMEN:

Joanie Weston: No introduction needed at all.

Ann Calvello: See Joanie

Chola: The greatest rollergirl of the modern era. Chola is pretty much the face of the sport right now and by far the best jammer in the game over the last decade.

Sister Mary Jane: The best 2 way player in TXRD history and at 6'3" the most dangerous female blocker the sport has ever known.

Patsy Delgado: Possibly the last truely great T-Bird and IMO, the ladies' MVP in the 1989 Rollergames season.

ALTERNATES: Stephanie Garcia and Honey Sanchez

Honorable mentions: Vicky Steppe, Gwen Miller, Mike Flaningam, and the entire skating Atkinson family.

Georgia Haas was a skater? I didn't know that, which league did she skate in? She was a beast in the Rollergames days....

It's my understanding she had to stop skating as she was a police officer and they didn't want cops doing things like skating roller derby or wrestling (presumably for fear of being injured). She became a coach/manager. Don Lastra became a referee (he was also a cop). I know a police officer from modern legit derby who had to become a referee for the same reason.

Being a newbie here, I had to sit back and really think about this one....gotta have a nice mix of jammers and blockers....having said that...my womens field would be...

Sandy Dunn, Joan Weston, Judi McGuire, Delores Tucker, Gwen Miller, Rosetta Saunders and Francine Cochu, it was tough though because Carolyn Moreland was one of my all time faves but had to be realistic.

My men's field...even harder to pick....

Bill Groll, Mike Gammon, Tony Roman, Larry Lewis, Frank Apodaca, James Paul, Pete Boyd round out my
seven...

So many that would get left out but whatcha gonna do....lots of honorable mentions....BJ Peterson, Bob Hein, Ronnie Robinson, Cal Stephans....Jan Vallow too but there has to be someone on the RED side...*grin*

My all-time team would be: Men - Little Richard Brown, Ronnie Rains, John Hall, Jim Trotter, Danny Reilly, Dave Pound, Buddy Atkinson Jr., Larry Lewis, Leroy "The Bad Boy" Gonzalez, Ralph Valladeres, and Lester Quarles; Women - Shirley Hardman, Ann Calvallo, Judy Sowinsky, Terry Lynch, Ruberta Mitchell, Honey Sanchez, Jan Vallow, Diane Syverson, and Julie Patrick.

Okay, I respect everyone's right to their opinion, but in my opinion, many of the best skaters were the pure Roller Derby athletes, not the skaters who were showy or loud-mouthed (although there were some players who were could be both, LOL!). So, in my opinion, here are the best of the best of all-time:

Women: Judi McGuire, Gerry Murray, Delores Tucker, Joan Weston, and Ann Calvello.

Men: Mike Gammon, Charlie O'Connell, Gene Gammon, Richard Brown, and Ronnie Robinson.

Alternates: Bill Groll, Larry Lewis/Tony Roman(tie), Sandy Dunn, Carol "Peanuts" Meyer
