The Rumor Mill: Live Gators Back in the Game? TV Exec Recommends Adding Electric Chair!

There was a time when--and only when--a game would go into Sudden Death Overtime and live Gators would be brought out to the track and put into the Gator Pit. In order to win a game, you would have to knock your opponent into the pit to score the winning game point. RollerGame Players were furious over the inclusion of live Gators--half wanted the creatures, half DID NOT! Now, there are rumors that the gators will be coming back. Officials are currently not commenting on these rumors. However, word has it that TV executives who are considering putting roller sports on the air may, in fact, demand it! Says one TV exec who wishes to go unnamed, "Live Gators are being considered, as are a pack of wild coyotes and wolves. The TV audience is very demanding. They want to see blood!" What do you think, should wild animals be part of SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME? (Note: See my follow up conversation with this TV exec below, where he also recommends that we add an electric chair element at the end of each game!).

The new show will be about the SPORT. While there may be obstacles (to appeal to all demographics and skating sports), I don't see alligators in the mix. This will be an athletic competition that has high-family appeal. Yes, there will be characters and bigger-than-life personalities that the audience can root for, but they will all be skating with one thing in mind--to WIN. I appreciate your feedback.

As for why RollerGames only lasted for one season, it was not because of the ratings. The show got great ratings. It actually doubled the audience of American Gladiators! However, the distributor went out of business, not because of RollerGames (they had many shows), before we could land another distribution deal. Stations ran out of episodes, and the series was replaced. That's the TV biz.

I value your opinions--and read every one of these comments. I plan on producing a show that I'm proud of--that my kids can watch. I would never allow them to watch wrestling. In addition, the show must have advertiser appeal. Advertisers want family friendly programming--need I say more?

no... i think you pretty much covered it

on one hand you say it's about the SPORT, on the other you say its about advertiser appeal

which is it?

do any other sports compromise their gameplay to gain advertising dollars? (well, except for wrestling)

no... i dont think so

if you need to change rollerderby to make it appeal to the tv "biz"... then its no longer roller derby... its no longer sport. it a tv show and little more

i cant think of any other reason this would happen than money. this is all about money - not sport. so lets not pretend it is.

if the tv biz doesnt like the modern version of roller derby... then thats just fine. roller derby in todays form doesnt exist to make money or keep business executives happy. it exists because of the players (and fans) who love the sport

to bring back the failed rollergames now is an attempt to do little more than ride on the coattails of the leagues that have brought roller derby back (evident by their logos appearing on this site for a short time) -- and produce a product that has no credibility

sure the skaters who took part in your rollergames were great skaters... but they were also actors. it had nothing to do with sport. just like the tv version of wrestling has nothing to do with the actual sport of wrestling.

one just needs to look at the videos on the front page to see that

like i said... if this really was about the great sport of roller derby id be all for it... thats why i signed up here. but the more i read and see, the less i believe that's the case

Thank you David for backing up what I said before. I agree. The TV Biz is a pain in the butt when it comes to bringing a sport to tv. Honestly return of RG would blow American Gladiators away. Yeah sure there was a little acting thrown in. whenever you're playing to teh crowd that is acting. But the rest is athletic skill.

The problem now is that these new wave people >>> like this Mick & Grandpoopah >>> think they own the sport >>> since they manage active rollergirl teams >>> but make no mistake about it >>> barely anybody shows up their games >>> and a part of the rollergirl community is actually supporting a XXX porn flick based on them
so don't worry >>> they're not the kind of suport you need

nicely said mike

so, you were around in 1935 when leo seltzer started it all?

no... i didnt think so
i dont think i own roller derby - do you?

i particularly like the way you can just lump all the modern leagues into the one basket - well done

I remember the all star game. when one of the jackson brothers launched over the wall of death. Talk about ouch.

FYI, I vote that WE NOT INCLUDE GATORS. However, I think a water Pit works well. Obstacles appeal to gamers--the young crowd. Bottom line, the Sport needs to be the main attraction. Obstacles are secondary. Look at the obstacles that the American Gladiators face--without them, there would be no show. Again, I vote against stunts like Alligators, etc. Just to set the record straight.

I agree no gators.. But I still want the wall of death and the jump ramp.

I agree....No Gators but definitly the Wall of Death and the Jet Jump

I agree with David Sams that the sport needs to be the main attraction but as far as I'm concerned, the only obstacles you need are good solid blocking skaters at the back of the pack to destroy any jammer coming in.
