Actually Las Vegas hosted the 26 series ESPN Rollergames from 1985-86, which means 23 years ago? What I don't get is with all this talk about training schools, why is it the same old lineups with 50+ year old skaters? Do you think this is going to sell it to a new generation? Mzzz Hase performance was stale 30 years ago. What do you think it's going to look now?

I do remember a couple Renegade rollergirls like Mayhemily and Go Go Liz skating a few games for the AZRG. These were superb athletes(Go Go Liz was a AZ State track star). They could of sparked whatever little life there is in the retro game. But from what I read, they felt shuned by the oldtimers who did'nt want to give up being stars. Same thing happened with Stace Blitch, who got benched in one game because she got tired following the same script of getting knocked down by Patsy Delgado's featherweight punches.
The problem with the oldtimers is that they expect you to pay your dues, before letting you be the star of the show.(even though it virtually halt's making new, younger fans)

Many of the newer players will NOT be playing this game because it is the SAME tired old line up and the same OLD SCHOOL ideology ..... Eat shit for the 50 something old school skaters..... New uniforms and a new location. Any new skaters? Good luck with that.

Well never mind Stacey, but go back to rollergames most successfull year;1972. Who can deny this? 10 mill weekly tv audience, kC Bomber-#1 at the box office, 50K+ in attendance at the Chicago game.
and look who were the female captains

Diane Syverson, captain of the Detroit Devils, age 18
Betty Brown, captain of the Northern Hawks, age 19
Peggy Fowler, captain of the Tri City Bucks, age 19
Tonette Kademas, captain of the most infamous team in roller derby history(Renegades), age 22
and of course my fav, Vicky Steppe, pro skater for the Hawks at age 16

can you tell the difference? between now and then? where you got 50+ year old skaters Sweet Stephanie, Patsy Delgado, Vicky Mcewan & Gwen Miller sharing the marquee?

Let me play the devil's advocate here.

To do training for banked track derby, you've either got to be in a place where you could keep the track outside (desert) or in a place with affordable warehouse type space.

Recent attempts at pro derby have been in places with very high real estate costs. Largely because that's where the promoters and skaters are based. Even with the real estate market tanking that probably isn't going away. Companies still need warehouses to store stuff in.

Perhaps they need to adjust their business model to new realities? Or start something new in a more affordable location? Two leagues in California seem to have pulled it off...

The L.A. Derby Dolls have had their full-time practice space (and venue) for a few years, the Doll Factory.

San Diego Derby Dolls have a full-time practice space (the Doll House) with a banked track and a flat track measured out. Their banked track is an older classic derby track, but I gather they're working on having a nice new one built.

I'd imagine they'd use the same process as TXRD does at that point, older track permanently assembled in the practice space, and newer track stored and assembled at their venue. That arrangement presumably saves them a build up and a tear down when they have a bout.

Outside of California and Texas, Oklahoma City's Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls have a warehouse and a track (single track league).

On the flat track side, Gotham Girls Roller Derby and Windy City Rollers have warehouse space they "own" and Sport Court/Skate Court. Gotham actually has two full sets (one semi-permanently based in their Crash Pad, the other stored and assembled at their college gym venue, last time I did the math that costs almost as much as a banked track.

I believe this is due to a combination of a lack of suitable rink space in their cities, and/or a desire for more practice time. It seems to have paid off rather richly for both if it's the latter. I'm sure it's ungodly expensive. Then again, when skaters pay higher dues, they have a good bit more reason to want to be there practicing their asses off every chance they get.

The Renegade Rollergirls down in Phoenix AZ appear to use some sort of warehouse type space for practice and bouts, but I don't know too much about their operation. I'd assume the AZ Derby Dames will have to arrange for something similar when they get their banked track later this year. They're about as large as TXRD (five teams) which I'm sure helps with the money.

I'm sure there's a few more here and there around the country. Back to the topic at hand, Lali's got an amazing situation, in that she has a banked track in her back yard. Once you pay for your track, the largest cost is the place to keep it in. Her mortgage payments and taxes cover that. Someday her delightful kids may lobby for a pool though.
72 Captains
Los Angeles Sally Vega
Baltimore Ruberta Mitchell
Cleveland Peggy Fowler
Renegades Tonette Kadramas
Outlaws BJ Peterson
Devils Diane Syverson
Hawks Betty Brown
Bombers Judy Sowinski
Warriors Judy Arnold

Vickie Steppe started out on the Texas Outlaws.

The same! STALE! One of the many reasons I won't be skating. Breaks my heart to work my ass off with Lali in her backyard for 3 and a half years and still have the same old shit and the same old line-ups. Bahhhhh! It's sooooo frustrating.

Hi Trish,
This is Loretta,I was kind of sorry not to see you and Melissa not skating the night of the game here in Las Vegas.

Please let me know what the problems are and if we can all get together for a meeting as there is plans on putting a few more games in a short peroid of time.
lali is trying very hard to be able to keep the Las Vegas High Rollers ,as a home team here.
I don't like to post where the whole world reads these people posting, I deal in private and want to help get this off the ground with some good feeling for everyone,
matziodine@aol.com is my email please make contact.
Love Loretta

OK OK let me get this straight! Halloween Night, Las Vegas, Derby, Sweet Stephanie and Patsy Delgado vs Lali O and Vicki McEwen and ya throw in Wild Man Dave Marez OH MY GOODNESS!! I am not passing that opportunity up. Should be the best game Ive seen in a while. Not to mention Halloween AND Vegas ...party-party-party! and the game is early enough (7pm) so I can hit the main strip and parties. All the makings of a Halloween you will never forget. I'm there for sure!
