RollerFans.com: The Roller Sports FanSpace!

since the "state of the game" discussion has been closed... i'll start a new discussion

there are several detractors of the modern rollerderby game on this website.
they like to focus on things like fishnets and penalty wheels... and repeatedly post that god-awful video of the half time show at a B.A.D game. not to mention those that say it's not roller derby unless it's on a banked track (or the figure 8 track)

to those people, please have a look at the video on the front page of the rose city rollers page

http://rosecityrollers.com/

rose city rollers have 170 members and actively raise money for charity and are part of their community - including starting up a program for high school girls that wouldnt traditionally be involved in sports

THAT'S what flat track roller derby is about.
that's what modern roller derby is

personally i see much more in today's version of roller derby than a cheesy tv show full of gimmicks that serves no other purpose than to make money for some, and give others the chance to get their head on tv

please share your thoughts

Nice documentary. I saw a friend or two in some stills. Kudos to them on becoming a 501c3, that's a bit of work to accomplish and maintain. They happen to bout in the arena where most of "Kansas City Bomber" was filmed.

The league I work for anted up the entry fee for a round robin that they couldn't even skate in, which benefits a breast cancer charity. Five leagues from around the country are paying to play, travel to and stay in OC for the event. Derby artists are donating painted casts of players busts that are being auctioned off.

If I didn't have to work I'd be there myself.

I agree with Poobah. It is very hard to get 501c3 status. I know a medieval recreation group that has that. It is very hard to keep it.

If it wasn;t for work I would probably try to help as well.

I think that what the girls did in Portland Oregon is pretty cool. But I would much rather see Brian "The Blade" Gamble do a double leg fly kick on a smaller curved track.

RCR is a great league but not unusal in their charity work, most (all) of the flat track leagues give to charities in their home towns. Where RCR stands out is in theire talent and team work, something which the documentry dosen't show :(

Too bad your not going to the benefit for breast cnacer in OC Grand Poobah I plan on going even though I live in Seattle and no one form around here is playing. But since RCR is my favorite league and I travel to Portland to watch all their bouts and I want to watch their rise to 2008 WFTDA national chapms that is where I'll have to be.

As far as seeing Brian "The Blade" Gamble do a double leg fly kick that would be super cool but I don't see how that would help you win a game. Flat track has some intresting move like the leg whip (not a new move but exciting anyway). There is plenty of "showboating" in flat track it just usually happens between jams or when one team has a big lead over the other.

Whether it's flat track or banked. If they give back to the community. More power to them. And it puts a smile on my face to see this happen.

is that right tim?
so... what about this choice comment you made about modern flat track?

"They aren't really doing roller derby. It's just T and A," said Tim Patten, a former derby pro who aims to field a new Bay Area team or two. "The skating is lousy. They're the half-time show in between bands. It's the new mud wrestling."

which is it? something for everyone, or not?

I think any kind of skating is a positive thing to make this great sport come back to it"s former glory. As a fan of ROLLER DERBY from the seventies to me i dont care what kind of skating is being done today any exposure is GREAT! ALBERT S

The reply George gave on that site was priceless. And I agree with Albert.

That's a music video, not bout footage, in case anyone is confused.

Three leagues contributed skaters to that video. Angel City Derby Girls (WFTDA), L.A. Derby Dolls, and Prison City Derby Dames (WFTDA hopefuls).

Chicago's Windy City Rollers (WFTDA) recently appeared in the Redwalls' video "Game of Love," the mic stand whip makes up for the occasional clockwise skating, IMO. And of course, seeing folks I know in videos and on TV is always fun. There's a member of this forum who's in the background of that one.

not bad for a "Rock video" with staged Derby as a back drop---Nice work.
